Somali American Extradited from Somalia Appears in Ohio Court on Murder Charges

A Somali American man extradited from Somalia has appeared in court in Ohio to face murder and robbery charges linked to a 2021 fatal shooting in Columbus. Hanut Abdulle, 23, was arraigned on charges of aggravated murder, murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the killing of Bryce Persang in west Columbus. Abdulle was indicted in 2023 on one count of aggravated murder, two counts of murder and one count of aggravated robbery, all carrying firearm specifications.

The case stems from a September 16, 2021 shooting in the 5500 block of Floral Circle South. Police responding to reports found Persang in the passenger seat of a Honda Fit with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Investigators said Abdulle and co-defendant Tahir Said, 24, were responsible for the killing. Authorities said both men fled the United States shortly after the shooting.

Abdulle was later arrested in Somalia and extradited to Ohio with assistance from the FBI, U.S. Marshals, the U.S. Department of Justice, Columbus police, Somali police and intelligence services, and other agencies in Africa. Said remains at large. David Zeyen will serve as the prosecutor in the case, according to the court.
