Sobers Meets World Bank Manager As Talks Focus On Funding And Caribbean Development Opportunities
Potential World Bank funding for infrastructure and social development was among the issues discussed when Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Sean Sobers, met with World Bank Group Country Manager Juan Carlos Alvarez on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
The courtesy call, held at the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs headquarters, focused on strengthening cooperation between Trinidad and Tobago and the international financial institution while exploring opportunities for development partnerships across the Caribbean.
During the discussions, Sobers emphasised the importance of stronger cooperation among CARICOM countries and reaffirmed Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to sustainable development.
According to details provided about the meeting, Alvarez outlined upcoming World Bank funding initiatives intended to support infrastructure improvements and social programmes.
The two officials also examined opportunities for joint projects that could draw on international financing and technical expertise to address development challenges facing Caribbean countries.
Alvarez was appointed World Bank Group Country Manager for Trinidad and Tobago in August 2026. His responsibilities include coordinating the institution’s activities across its lending, private investment and investment guarantee operations.
His appointment forms part of the World Bank Group’s efforts to strengthen support for employment creation, economic development and public and private sector priorities.
Despite the discussions surrounding possible development funding, no formal financing agreements were signed during Thursday’s meeting.
No specific funding amounts, approved projects or implementation timelines were announced.
Both officials nevertheless expressed an intention to maintain communication and explore future areas of cooperation.
The engagement highlights continued discussions between Trinidad and Tobago and international development partners over potential investment, infrastructure improvements and initiatives aimed at strengthening economic resilience.
For now, the meeting represents an opportunity for further collaboration rather than confirmation of new World Bank financing.
