A small aircraft was forced to make an unexpected landing on a Pennsylvania highway on Saturday morning, causing significant disruptions during the busy holiday weekend. The landing occurred on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 shortly after 9 a.m., according to Pennsylvania State Police.
The pilot, a 65-year-old man from Michigan, and his passenger, a 34-year-old woman from New Jersey, were unscathed in the incident. The aircraft, a Commander 114B manufactured in 1995, had taken off from Solberg Airport and was en route to Indiana when the pilot encountered engine trouble.
Upon detecting the mechanical issue, the pilot managed to safely maneuver the plane onto the highway, thus preventing any injuries or vehicular collisions. The unexpected landing, however, led to notable traffic delays as authorities responded to the scene and undertook the task of clearing the aircraft from the roadway.
Investigations into the cause of the engine problem are currently ongoing. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of swift decision-making and skill in averting potential disasters in aviation.
