Ski season in crisis: lack of snow threatens Argentina’s winter resorts

Winter resorts across Argentina’s Andes are facing a tough season as a shortage of natural snowfall leaves slopes thin and many runs closed. The crisis hits during winter school break, typically the busiest time for mountain tourism.

A long-awaited snowstorm this week blanketed Bariloche, Villa La Angostura, San Martín de los Andes, and Malargüe, but forecasters say it may not be enough to build a proper base. Resorts like Cerro Catedral are operating only beginner slopes, with tourists complaining of long lift queues and full prices despite limited access.

Tourism operators report a sharp drop in visitors. Mercedes López Gomara, a travel agent in Villa La Angostura, told the Herald that hotel occupancy is just 35%—unusually low for the holiday period. She called the 2025 winter season ‘a disaster’ across the Andes, citing the snow shortage, a strong dollar, and high inflation that make Argentina expensive for both locals and foreigners.

The national government, however, issued a statement claiming 85% occupancy in Bariloche and 80% in Malargüe. The discrepancy highlights the uneven impact of the snow crisis.

Brazilian tourists remain a bright spot, drawn by the novelty of snow. But many Argentines are choosing cheaper destinations abroad. Resorts hope ongoing snowstorms will allow partial recovery, but operators warn that canceling travelers often postpone until next year rather than rebook later.
