Sir Garfield Sobers, Greatest All-Rounder in Cricket History, Dies at 89

Sir Garfield Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder cricket has ever seen, passed away at his home in Barbados on Friday at the age of 89. His death marks the end of an extraordinary era for the sport, particularly for the West Indies, a region he represented with unmatched brilliance. Cricket West Indies confirmed his passing with a tribute on X: ‘A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers.’

Sobers played 93 Test matches for the West Indies between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, with 26 centuries. He also took 235 wickets with his versatile left-arm bowling, excelling in pace, orthodox spin, and wrist spin. Beyond batting and bowling, he was celebrated as one of the finest fielders of his time.

One of the defining moments of his career came in 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, the highest individual Test score at the time, a record that stood for 36 years. In 1968, while playing for Nottinghamshire, he became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.

Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975, Sobers was named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the 20th Century. The ICC’s Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy is awarded annually to the best men’s international cricketer, a lasting tribute to his impact. His legacy will inspire generations to come.
