Pop star Ed Sheeran addressed the conflict in Gaza during a concert in Philadelphia on Saturday, describing the situation as catastrophic, unjustifiable, and disproportionate. The remarks followed a period of public criticism regarding the removal of rapper Macklemore from Sheeran’s tour after the artist made pro-Palestinian comments at a New Jersey performance.
Sheeran, who had previously maintained an apolitical stance, stated that the scale of devastation and the loss of civilian lives in Gaza and the West Bank could not be overlooked. He denied personal responsibility for the decision to remove Macklemore, attributing the action to the tour promoter. The controversy led to four supporting acts, including Sheeran’s backing band and performer Finneas, withdrawing from the tour.
Addressing the audience, Sheeran expressed regret over the situation and stated that he had faced difficult decisions. He also voiced concern regarding the practice of venues pre-approving the content of performances, stating that such restrictions should not occur in the free world. Critics, including some fans and the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, have accused Sheeran of complicity with stadium owners, including businessman Robert Kraft, and have called for a boycott of his remaining tour dates.
Outside Lincoln Financial Field, protesters gathered to demonstrate against the singer, while some fans expressed mixed feelings about attending the event. Despite the controversy and an increase in ticket resales, the stadium remained near capacity for the performance. Sheeran performed the show without a traditional opening act, later joined by five musicians who replaced those who had departed the tour.
