Should We All Be Making Moves Like the Scarlet Ibis?

Pack your bags. Change your scenery. Find better snacks.

That appears to be the life strategy of one Scarlet Ibis currently turning heads in Southampton, England—thousands of miles away from the tropical wetlands of the Caribbean and South America.

The brilliantly red bird, believed to have escaped from a local collection, has been spotted feeding along the River Test and nearby marshes. And this is not a quick holiday appearance. The ibis has reportedly been seen repeatedly, casually foraging beside native birds as though grey English skies were always part of the plan.

That alone is extraordinary. The Scarlet Ibis is built for warm mangroves, coastal lagoons and Caribbean sunshine—not chilly British winters and weather that changes its mind every six minutes.

Even more impressive? Its vivid colour comes partly from pigments in the crustaceans it eats. So the fact that it remains gloriously scarlet suggests it has located suitable food and settled into its new surroundings remarkably well.

For Trinidad and Tobago, where the Scarlet Ibis is a treasured national symbol, the sight is especially surreal. Imagine travelling to England and discovering our national bird already there, thriving, networking and apparently refusing to be homesick.

Perhaps there is a lesson in all of this: adapt quickly, stand out boldly and never underestimate what can happen when you leave your comfort zone.

The Scarlet Ibis certainly didn’t.
