Suriname must accelerate preparations for oil and gas revenues, sociologist and policy expert Marten Schalkwijk said on September 12, 2026. Schalkwijk emphasized that the period from 2026 to 2028 is critical for establishing the necessary legislation, financial structures and policy measures to manage future oil income.
According to Schalkwijk, the government should focus on creating a legal framework that governs the extraction and distribution of oil and gas proceeds, as well as setting up financial mechanisms to ensure transparent and sustainable use of the funds. He added that timely implementation of these measures will help the country avoid the pitfalls experienced by other oil-producing nations.
Schalkwijk’s remarks were reported by the Dutch-language newspaper DE WEST.
