San Fernando Man Charged for Selling Encumbered Vehicle

A resident of San Fernando has been charged with gaining money under false pretenses after a Fraud Squad investigation. The investigation uncovered an alleged sale of a motor vehicle which had encumbrances. The accused stood before Master de Silva in the San Fernando South B Court on January 30, 2026, and was granted bail of $150,000. He was further instructed to relinquish his passport and report to the local police station. The case has been postponed to February 5, 2026. The police launched an investigation following a report made on October 30, 2025. The report was filed by a victim who claimed to have paid $140,000 cash for a red Toyota Corolla, which was supposedly free of encumbrances. However, further enquiries exposed that the vehicle was used as collateral on an unsettled loan and had been repossessed two days before the report was filed. Following a thorough investigation, the suspect was arrested on January 28, 2026, identified by eyewitnesses, and formally charged with obtaining $120,000 by false pretenses.
