Mayor Robert Parris has confirmed that the San Fernando Carnival will proceed in 2026 despite a cut in funding. Last year, the Carnival received $700,000, but the budget for 2026 has been slashed to $500,000. This reduction in funding comes as a surprise as the prevision expectation was for the higher level of funding to continue. In light of this, there will be changes to the Carnival’s operations, which may include reducing the number of competitions and events. Nonetheless, city officials plan to meet with Carnival stakeholders to discuss the impact of these cuts. Despite financial pressures, there’s a commitment to settle previous years’ debts while keeping the Carnival on the city’s cultural calendar. The management of the San Fernando Carnival will be revamped to align with the reduced budget, but the mayor remains confident that the festival will still be successfully held.
