Safia Hosein Says She Took Biche Pride To Antarctica’s Highest Mountain Summit

Trinidad and Tobago mountaineer Safia Hosein is drawing praise online after sharing an emotional reflection on taking the name of her hometown, Biche, to the summit of the tallest mountain in Antarctica. In a social media post, Hosein said her achievement was about more than reaching a physical peak. She said it was also a statement about identity, pride and the value of coming from a rural community often looked down on by others. Hosein wrote that she wanted people to understand why it mattered so deeply to her that “the first person from my country to summit the highest mountain in Antarctica was a bush girl from Biche.” She explained that she grew up in the countryside of Trinidad and described Biche as a beautiful rural place, but said people often tried to make her feel small because of where she came from. According to her post, she was called names such as “country bookie” and told she lived “in the bush.” Hosein said those comments stayed with her, but never weakened her pride in her roots. Even as an adult, she said, some people still tried to use her background against her. Her response, she said, was to embrace it even more strongly. In one of the images shared, Hosein is seen on a snowy summit holding a flag with the word “BICHE.” In another, she holds the national flag of Trinidad and Tobago, saying she wanted to show that a Trinbagonian could achieve anything. She said mountaineering is not a sport widely associated with Trinidad and Tobago, largely because the country does not have mountains of that scale, but added that this should never be mistaken for a lack of ability or ambition. Hosein also said she carried her country with her, pointing to the saying that you can find a Trini anywhere. Her message resonated with many viewers online, not only as a celebration of personal accomplishment, but as a powerful reminder that people from small communities can reach the world’s most extreme places. Her post has since been praised by supporters who saw it as an inspiring declaration of self-worth, national pride and loyalty to home.
