Safety Concerns Close New Bhopal Bridge

A newly constructed Rail Over Bridge in Bhopal, India, has raised safety concerns due to a nearly 90-degree turn mid-bridge, which poses significant risks for vehicle navigation. The construction, which cost around ₹18 crore, resulted in the immediate suspension of seven engineers from the Public Works Department, including two chief engineers, for serious negligence. Additionally, a retired superintendent engineer is under departmental inquiry, and the construction firm, along with the design consultants, has been blacklisted from future public projects. The problematic design was a result of multiple alignment changes over seven years due to land disputes involving railway property and a nearby metro station. Authorities claim the sharp turn was necessary due to limited land availability, but the bridge remains closed until a redesign can ensure safety. Plans are being considered to purchase additional land to create a safer, smoother curve for the bridge.
