Remembering Joey Carew on What Would Have Been His 89th Birthday: West Indies Cricket Legend

On September 15, 2026, cricket fans in Trinidad and Tobago pause to honor what would have been Joey Carew’s 89th birthday. The former West Indies opening batsman and long‑serving selector remains a towering figure in Caribbean cricket history.

Born Michael Conrad Carew on September 15, 1937, in Port of Spain, he debuted for the West Indies in 1963. Over nine years he appeared in 19 Test matches, scoring more than 1,100 runs with a solid mid‑30s average as a left‑handed opener.

Domestically, Carew captained Trinidad and Tobago, guiding the side to back‑to‑back Shell Shield titles – a first in the island’s cricket annals. His leadership at Queen’s Park Cricket Club cemented his status as a local legend and a mentor to younger players.

After hanging up his pads, Carew turned to selection, serving roughly two decades across three stints. He chaired the West Indies selection panel, succeeding Viv Richards, and is credited with nurturing future star Brian Lara through personal advice and encouragement.

Tributes after his death on January 8, 2011, described his contribution as “immeasurable” and lamented that West Indies cricket was poorer without his passion. Today, his legacy lives on in the players he inspired and the standards he set for the game.
