Racist Pogroms in Belfast: Families Forced from Homes as Far-Right Violence Escalates

Two weeks ago, racist pogroms were mounted against ethnic minority and migrant people in greater Belfast, forcing families from their homes. The attacks, described as reminiscent of the sectarian pogroms of 1969, involved violent mobs and intimidatory protests across the north of Ireland.

The violence was preceded by a murderous knife attack in North Belfast, which was then exploited by sinister far-right and unionist paramilitary elements to cause terror and disruption. Social media platforms have been manipulated to normalise anti-immigrant sentiment, with research confirming well-funded far-right sources systematically targeting Irish society.

Sinn Féin, in a statement, condemned the attacks and called for decisive leadership against racism, sectarianism, and fascism. The party reiterated its commitment to equality, social justice, and human rights, linking the local violence to a global rise in extreme right politics.
