Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his support for Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro amidst rising tensions between Venezuela and the United States. This comes after U.S. forces seized a Venezuelan oil tanker which was condemned by Maduro’s government as an act of international piracy. Putin’s show of support underscores the strong political and economic ties between Russia and Venezuela. The U.S. has increased pressure on Maduro’s government through expanded sanctions and enhanced naval presence in the southern Caribbean. The seized vessel, identified as the Skipper, was reportedly carrying Venezuelan crude oil. The U.S. has accused the ship of engaging in sanctioned oil transport from Venezuela and Iran. In response, allied states, including Belarus, have reached out to Maduro, reflecting concern about U.S. attempts to isolate Venezuela. This deepening confrontation signals a broader dispute over influence in Latin America.
