Prominent Trinidad Businessman Wayne Yip Choy Found Dead in Suspected Suicide

Wayne Yip Choy, a 73-year-old businessman, was found dead on Monday afternoon in a West Moorings gated apartment complex. The police are currently treating the case as a suspected suicide, after responding to reports of gunshots. Choy’s body was discovered beneath a tree in the compound’s car park, near a firearm.

The alarm was raised by the apartment complex manager and security officers, who heard two loud bangs. Upon investigation, they made the distressing discovery. Several items were seized by the officers from the car park and Yip Choy’s apartment, including electronic devices and documents. A licensed firearm, registered to the deceased, along with ammunition, was also recovered.

CCTV footage from the scene revealed Yip Choy was alone in the car park at the time of the incident. His body has since been transported to the Forensic Science Centre, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled.

Yip Choy was a prominent figure in Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturing sector. His career, which began in 1976, saw him hold various roles including managing director of Caribbean Development Company and president of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association. He served as CEO of Angostura Holdings Ltd, taking the helm amid financial turmoil and stabilising the company. His portfolio also included board positions with Readymix (West Indies) Ltd and Trinidad Cement Ltd.

The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation.
