Privy Council Reinstates Defamation Ruling Against Minister

The Privy Council reinstated a High Court ruling, ordering Housing Minister Phillip Edward Alexander to pay damages for defaming businessman Andrew Gabriel. The case revolved around derogatory statements made by Alexander during a media interview and subsequent Facebook posts. The original ruling awarded Gabriel $525,000 in general and $250,000 in aggravated damages, but the Court of Appeal reduced the amount to $10,000. The Privy Council disagreed with the reduction, emphasizing the seriousness of the allegations and the extent of publication, including on social media. The case will now return to the High Court to reassess damages.
