Princess Royal Sailing Club season kicks off despite adverse weather as local Colin Bairstow opens proceedings

The refurbished Caravelle on display.

Adverse weather on Saturday prevented sailors from participating in the Princess Royal Sailing Club’s traditional sail‑past that was intended to launch the 2026‑2027 season. The cold, wintry October day drew a small but enthusiastic crowd that gathered for the customary champagne and strawberry toast before the club’s commodore began the proceedings. During his address, Commodore Stephen Brown noted that he is one of two siblings to have served as PRSC commodore; his brother Geoff had held the position twice. After Brown’s remarks, Colin Bairstow was introduced and spoke about his family’s long association with the club before officially opening the new season. Commodore Brown also highlighted the refurbished Caravelle yacht, which was donated to the club by the Albany Maritime Foundation for use in junior sail training. In 2026 the Foundation painted and rigged the French‑designed 3‑metre boat, a design similar to the well‑known Mirror, and will continue to maintain the Caravelle on a periodic basis. Serious racing is set to begin this Saturday, with yachts competing in three divisions.
