Granada’s National Democratic Congress Holds Lead in General Election Granada – The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised to secure a majority in the island’s Parliament following preliminary results from the general election held on Thursday. The NDC, led by incumbent Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, is on track to win more than the eight seats required for a majority and currently leads in 14 of the 15 constituencies. The main opposition party, the New National Party (NNP), headed by Emmalin Pierre – the first woman to lead a political party in Granada – topped the vote in the San Jorge Noroeste constituency. Final results are expected to be announced early tomorrow after the vote count continues. A total of 46 candidates vied for the 15 seats in the Parliament. Among them was former Foreign Minister Peter David, who launched the Democratic Popular Movement (DPM) on 16 November last year. The Parliamentary Election Office (PEO) reported that 97,020 voters were registered for the election, an increase of 9,454 from the 87,566 registered in the June 23, 2022 general election. In a national message before the polls opened, Prime Minister Mitchell said, “Four years ago, I was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as your prime minister. It was an honor then, it is now, and it is a responsibility I have never taken lightly.” The election process was monitored by observers from the Organization of American States and the Caribbean Community. Granada, a former British colony that is part of the Lesser Antilles, operates as a parliamentary monarchy with King Charles III as head of state.
