Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar Defends Anti-Crime Campaign Against Critics

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has come forward to staunchly defend the Government’s anti-crime initiatives, addressing criticisms that have surfaced in recent times. She accused detractors of perpetuating false narratives designed to inflame racial tensions and discredit Trinidad and Tobago’s protective services. These actions, she suggested, aim to undermine critical assistance from United States security agencies.

In a detailed social media statement, Persad-Bissessar highlighted concerns over intercepted conversations that pointed to an alleged plot to assassinate her and other members of her Government. The investigation, which has garnered international attention, involves a thorough examination of electronic devices by partnering U.S. agencies.

The Prime Minister praised increased American support for local security efforts, a move that she claims has unsettled criminal interests. She commended the Police Service, Defence Force, Strategic Services Agency, and Prison Service for their unwavering commitment amidst public criticism. Notably, she cited a 15 percent reduction in serious crime in 2026 as evidence of their effective work.

Persad-Bissessar vowed to continue collaborating with international partners to dismantle organized crime networks. She also pledged to eradicate what she referred to as a two-tiered justice system, promising that wealth and influence would not shield individuals from facing justice.
