Prime Minister Gonsalves Critiques Massy Stores, Calls for Operational Improvements

St. Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has called on Massy Stores to reevaluate its operations in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, particularly regarding the store’s aesthetics and product range. During a statement on July 11, Gonsalves criticized the local Massy supermarket, claiming it is the worst in the Caribbean compared to its counterparts in Barbados and St. Lucia. He questioned why St. Vincent should settle for inferior quality.

Following his remarks, Gonsalves engaged in discussions with a former senior official from Massy, who promised to relay the concerns to the Chief Executive in Trinidad. This official indicated that an investigation into the complaints would be conducted to improve the situation in St. Vincent. Gonsalves stressed the importance of addressing such quality issues proactively, noting that enhancing local offerings is crucial to compete effectively.

He emphasized the need for Massy to expand its inventory to meet or exceed the standard set by competitors. Gonsalves urged for a minimum standard of quality, encouraging the establishment of higher benchmarks to ensure St. Vincent’s supermarkets are competitive within the region. “What occurs in St. Vincent that is more severe than in other locations?” he asked, reinforcing the call for improvement and higher standards in local retail.
