President’s Office Denies ‘Defamatory’ Claims on $500M Loan Allegations

The Office of the President of Trinidad and Tobago has firmly rebuffed allegations linking it to a controversial US$500 million financing arrangement. In a statement released on April 25, the Office described the claims circulating online as ‘reckless and wholly improper,’ emphasizing that neither the institution nor President Christine Kangaloo played any improper role in government transactions.

The response was prompted by a viral social media post that made explosive assertions, claiming the President’s Office had been ‘prostituted’ in connection with financing tied to the Port of Spain waterfront. This incendiary language was condemned by the Office as ‘scandalous and degrading,’ warning that such claims undermine public trust and disrespect the nation’s highest constitutional office.

Officials reiterated that the President’s functions are carried out in accordance with the law, often based on the advice of Cabinet or authorized ministers. The statement specifically referenced Section 80(1) of the Constitution, which governs the exercise of executive authority in the State.

Additionally, the Office cautioned against what it termed ‘viral defamation,’ asserting that while scrutiny is crucial for democracy, ‘scurrilous attacks’ can erode respect for institutions and diminish confidence in governance. The controversy revolves around allegations that the financing arrangement could expose the State to long-term financial obligations and raise transparency concerns regarding public finances.

As attention continues to build around the allegations and the official response, the Office indicated that further statements may be issued as necessary.
