Portugal Launches First National Network of Digital Missionaries to Humanize Online Culture

The first National Network of Digital Missionaries of Portugal has been officially launched in Alfândega da Fé, a town in the Trás-os-Montes region. This pioneering initiative aims to unite Catholic dioceses, parishes, movements, content creators, and digital influencers across the country under a common mission: to humanize digital culture and spread a message of hope online.

The network represents a coordinated effort by the Catholic Church in Portugal to engage more deeply with the digital world, recognizing the growing influence of online platforms in everyday life. By bringing together a diverse range of actors—from official church bodies to individual creators—the initiative seeks to foster a more positive and compassionate presence on social media and other digital spaces.

Organizers emphasize that the network is not about proselytizing but about building genuine connections and offering a hopeful perspective in an often fragmented digital environment. The launch event in Alfândega da Fé highlighted the potential for collaboration between traditional church structures and modern digital communicators.

This is the first national-level initiative of its kind in Portugal, setting a precedent for how faith communities can adapt to and shape the evolving digital landscape. The network is expected to develop projects and events that encourage meaningful online interactions and provide support for Catholic digital creators.
