Port of Spain Workers Secure June Salaries Amid Financial Uncertainty

Civil servants in Port of Spain can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the standoff over their June 2026 salaries comes to an end. The Ministry of Local Government has released the necessary funds, resolving days of payroll uncertainty. The announcement was made by the city’s Mayor, Chinua Alleyne, who received a cheque from the Ministry that allows the Treasurer’s Department to start processing salaries immediately.

Rejoicing in this development, Mayor Alleyne described it as a victory for ‘good sense and truth’. He expressed his relief that the long-standing dispute over the June payroll has been put to rest. He also commended the corporation’s employees for their patience and professionalism throughout the delay, acknowledging the hardship caused by the uncertainty surrounding their pay.

Despite this breakthrough, Alleyne warned that the financial challenges faced by the Corporation are far from over. The Mayor revealed that the Ministry has not yet allocated funding to cover salary payments for the months of July, August, and September 2026.

Alleyne reassured that they will continue negotiations with the Ministry of Local Government to secure the outstanding funds and prevent further disruptions to workers’ salaries. He added that the Corporation also intends to press the Ministry on another unresolved issue—the implementation of wage rate increases and outstanding back pay owed to daily-rated employees.

While the resolution of the June payroll issue brings immediate relief to hundreds of municipal workers, city officials are now shifting their focus to secure funding for the upcoming months and to address long-standing wage issues once and for all.
