Port of Spain Prison Stops Contraband Smuggling Attempt

Early Sunday morning on September 6, 2026, prison officers at Port of Spain Prison intercepted a suspected contraband smuggling attempt. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, two packages were thrown over the facility’s perimeter wall and recovered by officers at about 7:40 a.m. The items included 28 packs of cigarettes, 266 grams of plant‑like material resembling marijuana, a Samsung replacement screen, and a 20‑ounce plastic bottle of alcohol.

Acting Commissioner of Prisons Elvin Scanterbury praised the officers’ vigilance, dedication and commitment, noting that the timely interception prevented contraband from reaching inmates. Scanterbury warned that contraband poses a serious threat to prison security, undermines rehabilitation and can create risks beyond the facility.

The Prison Service reiterated its commitment to strengthen security measures and collaborate with law‑enforcement partners to prevent prohibited articles from entering correctional facilities.
