The State of Mauritius, the Commissioner of Police, and two individual police officers have formally denied any liability in a lawsuit that sought compensation of €1,617,000,000, roughly Rs 88.2 billion, in cryptocurrency.
The claim was filed by the liquidated company Digitus Holdings, which alleged that the police had been negligent in handling a Bitcoin transaction that ultimately led to the loss of the funds.
In a statement released by the police, the officials rejected all responsibility for the alleged negligence and clarified that they had complied with all applicable regulations and procedures at the time of the incident.
The lawsuit represents a significant legal dispute in Mauritius, as it involves one of the largest cryptocurrency-related claims in the country’s history.
Both the police and the State of Mauritius have indicated that they will continue to cooperate with the court proceedings and provide any necessary documentation to support their defense.
As the case proceeds, observers will be watching closely to see how the court interprets the responsibilities of law enforcement in the context of digital asset transactions.
