Police promotes officers in Blantyre rescue operation

Eight junior police officers have received promotions and monetary rewards following their participation in a rescue operation that secured the release of British national Nasrat Osman. Inspector General of Police Richard Luhanga announced that each of the eight officers will receive K1 million in recognition of their efforts.

The rescue took place on Friday in Mingale Village, Mpemba, Blantyre, where the 47-year-old Osman had been held since his abduction on September 11, 2026. The operation, led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira, involved an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the deaths of two suspected abductors. During the confrontation, Kayira sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach.

National police spokesperson Gladys Chiwaula stated that the Inspector General commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism. Luhanga encouraged other members of the police force to emulate the conduct displayed during the mission.

Addressing a press briefing in Blantyre on Saturday, Luhanga noted that while eight suspects were involved in the abduction, six remain at large. He emphasized that the police service is increasing training for officers to better address the recent rise in abduction cases.

Additionally, the police service confirmed that six local individuals who provided information leading to the rescue of Osman will share a K30 million reward. This sum was previously offered by law enforcement for information resulting in the victim’s recovery.
