Police Commissioner Warns Against Online Threats

Commissioner Allister Guevarro of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has issued a public warning in response to a rise in online posts containing threats of violence, including those aimed at public officials. He emphasized that while freedom of expression is a right, it does not cover conduct that veers into criminal activity, such as inciting violence, intimidating others, or using digital platforms to issue threats. Guevarro reminded the public about the Emergency Powers Regulations 2025, which gives the Minister of National Security authority to issue a Preventive Detention Order for online activities that incite violence or endanger national safety. The TTPS, he assured, will take action against anyone using social media to issue threats or incite violence. He urged citizens to use online platforms responsibly and within the law, warning that those who issue threats will face legal consequences.
