The People’s National Movement (PNM) is urging the Government to promptly clarify the recent declaration of a State of Emergency (SoE), emphasizing the need for transparency during a time of national concern. In a media release, the Opposition expressed alarm over rising violent crime rates and reiterated their support for the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and other security agencies. Criticism was directed at the Government for not providing a public explanation regarding the SoE, as the sole communication came from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. The PNM highlighted that, by 11:00 a.m., hours after the SoE announcement, there was no official response from key government figures. Although Attorney General John Jeremie held a press conference later in the day, the PNM stressed the importance of accountability and transparency, especially in light of serious intelligence regarding a dangerous criminal network targeting state officials. They called for the Government to disclose non-sensitive information about the SoE, including its rationale, duration, and the measures to be implemented, to ensure public trust and understanding.
