Today, we celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the People’s National Movement (PNM), an organization that has significantly shaped the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. The PNM, founded on January 24, 1956, with the adoption of the People’s Charter, has been a leading force in creating a stronger, more united nation. The charter was a visionary framework for self-governance, political education, economic development, and social equality beyond race and class. Over the years, four leaders have guided this movement with a clear national programme, each contributing to its strength and impact. Dr Eric Williams, George Chambers, Patrick Manning, and Dr Keith Rowley each had their time as Political Leaders, steering the nation towards progress. On June 22, 2025, marking yet another pivotal moment, I had the privilege of becoming the PNM’s fifth Political Leader, and notably, the first woman to do so. Despite being the third leader elected after an election defeat, I remain steadfast and committed to the PNM and our shared mission. As we honour our 70th year, we are still strong, still serving, and still building.
