Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has declared that no further funds will be distributed to regional corporations unless they show a significant improvement in service provision. This announcement comes after the Prime Minister voiced concerns about excessive spending on social activities and projects that bring little value to communities. Data shows that seven regional corporations controlled by the People’s National Movement (PNM) will receive a total of $987.29 million in 2026, $181.83 million more than the amount allocated to corporations under the United National Congress (UNC). The Prime Minister also drew attention to staffing differences and poor work ethics in these corporations. She warned that if there’s no marked improvement in their performance, many functions may be outsourced. Future allocations to these corporations will be based on their performance in the next eight months.
