PM Modi conveys best wishes for China’s BRICS Presidency in meeting with President Xi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi to discuss the current state of bilateral relations. The meeting, which took place on Saturday, provided an opportunity for the two leaders to review the progress of India-China ties since their previous engagement in Tianjin in August 2025.

Following the discussion, Prime Minister Modi expressed his support for China’s upcoming BRICS presidency, which is scheduled to begin next year. In a statement released by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders emphasized that both nations should maintain a strategic and long-term perspective on their relationship, asserting that existing differences should not escalate into disputes.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of three guiding principles for the relationship: mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest. He further stressed that maintaining peace and tranquility in frontier areas remains a fundamental requirement for the advancement of bilateral ties. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary question, based on the broader political context of their bilateral relations.

The discussion also covered economic and trade cooperation. Both sides acknowledged the need to address structural trade imbalances and supply chain concerns, while also working toward facilitating predictable market access. Additionally, the leaders reviewed efforts to improve interpersonal connections, including cultural exchanges, commercial connectivity, and cross-border mobility.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that both heads of state agreed on the importance of expanding areas of consensus regarding regional and international issues, as well as collaborating on shared global challenges.
