Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has revealed her suspicions that senators appointed by the President could oppose the Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) legislation in the Senate today. The Law Reform (Zones of Special Operations) (Special Security and Community Development Measures) Bill, 2026, backed by the Government’s parliamentary majority, is up for debate in the Upper House. The Government needs support from at least four of the nine Independent senators for the bill to pass. The Opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) is already against the legislation. Persad-Bissessar has raised questions regarding the independence of the President-appointed senators, as President Christine Kangaloo is known to be associated with the PNM, suggesting potential bias in significant national matters.
