Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has declared another state of emergency (SoE) in response to escalating crime rates and ongoing threats to law enforcement. This followed the end of the previous SoE on January 31, during which 31 murders were recorded, including several double homicides. The decision was based on police intelligence suggesting that mass shootings and violence were set to continue. Persad-Bissessar also criticized the Opposition People’s National Movement (PNM), stating her administration’s willingness to confront criminals unlike the previous one.
