Veteran Trinidad and Tobago photojournalist Andrea De Silva has received the Chaconia Medal (Silver), earning national recognition for her contribution to photography and the media.
De Silva received the honour during the 57th National Awards Ceremony at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s, on Republic Day, September 24.
President Christine Kangaloo presented the national awards as Trinidad and Tobago recognised citizens for distinguished and outstanding service in various fields.
De Silva was among several veteran media practitioners honoured at the ceremony. Fellow media professionals Omatie Lyder, Ria Taitt and Jai Parasram were also awarded the Chaconia Medal (Silver).
De Silva has spent decades documenting Trinidad and Tobago through photography, capturing news events, national celebrations, cultural traditions and everyday life.
Her work has also reached audiences outside Trinidad and Tobago through international news organisations. De Silva has contributed photography to global agencies including Reuters and EFE, with images from Trinidad and Tobago distributed internationally.
Her national recognition also drew congratulations from the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago, which acknowledged the media practitioners who received awards this year.
For De Silva, the Chaconia Medal represents national recognition of a career spent largely behind the camera, documenting the people, events and moments that have helped tell Trinidad and Tobago’s story.
