**Philippine Defense Secretary Warns China Could Exploit Cuts in U.S.–South Korean Military Drills**

*Tokyo, 7 September 2026* – Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro told reporters that Washington had assured Manila that its security commitments to the Philippines remain unchanged, even as the United States and South Korea announced reductions in their joint military exercises.

Teodoro said the cuts could create an opportunity for China to exploit a perceived weakening of U.S. presence in the region. “China could take advantage of the reduced U.S.–South Korean drills,” he said.

The U.S. and South Korea have conducted annual joint drills for more than two decades. In recent months, the U.S. announced a scaling back of the exercises, citing budgetary constraints and a shift in strategic priorities. The Philippine government has expressed concern that the changes could affect the security dynamics in the South China Sea.

Washington has repeatedly stated that its defense commitments to the Philippines, including the Mutual Defense Treaty and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, remain intact. The Philippine defense ministry reiterated that the U.S. will continue to support Philippine security interests despite the adjustments to the joint drills with South Korea.
