Analyst Arben Meçe has characterized the current state of the Democratic Party (PD) as a “Berishian sect,” arguing that the party has transitioned into a private enterprise serving the interests of Sali Berisha’s family. In an interview with ABC News, Meçe claimed that the party’s influence has waned significantly, asserting that it is currently unable to mobilize more than 500 people for public protests. Meçe alleged that during recent demonstrations, individuals associated with Berisha engaged in acts of violence and intimidation against other protesters who hold opposing views. He cited specific instances where individuals critical of both the government and Berisha were targeted by the latter’s supporters. According to Meçe, these actions reflect a broader strategy aimed at the survival of the Berisha family rather than the functioning of a democratic opposition. The analyst further claimed that the Democratic Party’s current mission is detrimental to the democratic process in Albania. He drew a comparison between the turnout at recent PD-led protests and those organized by other political actors, such as Arlind Qori’s movement, suggesting that the latter has demonstrated a greater capacity for mobilization. Additionally, Meçe leveled serious allegations regarding the political alignment of the former Prime Minister, stating that Berisha’s actions are influenced by Russian interests. He concluded by distinguishing between the historical role of the Democratic Party in establishing pluralism in Albania and what he termed “Berishism,” which he described as a destructive force for the country’s political landscape.
