Parliament to Discuss State of Emergency Extension on Monday

Parliament is set to reconvene on Monday, July 28th, to discuss the potential extension of the State of Emergency (SoE) that was originally declared on July 18th. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar confirmed the extraordinary session following requests for clarification from various quarters. According to Section 10(1) of the Constitution, any extension of the SoE beyond its initial 15 days must receive parliamentary approval. A simple majority in the House can extend the SoE for another six months, but any further extensions will require a three-fifths majority vote in both the House and the Senate.
