The Parang community is mourning the passing of Franklin Salazar, a veteran musician and respected cuatrista who was an integral part of the Santa Flora-based Parang group, Los Pastores. The National Parang Association of Trinidad and Tobago expressed their condolences to Salazar’s loved ones, acknowledging his cherished status within the community. Known fondly as ‘Uncle Franklin’, Salazar was admired for his proficiency with the cuatro, a key instrument in traditional parang music. His performances with Los Pastores, a band also featuring his late brother Philip Salazar, have been instrumental in preserving and celebrating the rich musical traditions of the Christmas season in Trinidad and Tobago. The association highlighted that Franklin and Philip’s shared passion for parang music inspired many young musicians. They assured that Salazar’s legacy will continue through the music he shared with parranderos across generations.
