Parade Cancellation Funds Redirected to Crime-Fighting Efforts

The government is projected to save around $2.6 million following the cancellation of this year’s Independence Day parade and fireworks display in the capital city. The ceremonial events had already been given the green light by the prior People’s National Movement administration in February. Yet, the parade alone was projected to cost $1.5 million, including various expenses. This year, instead of the parade and fireworks, the government chose to observe a National Day of Prayer and Reflection. Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein defended this decision, citing security concerns related to the current State of Emergency. He added that the savings from the cancellation would be reallocated to initiatives aimed at combating crime.
