Over 1.2 Million Zambian Learners Now Covered by School Health Programme

More than 1.2 million learners across Zambia are now benefiting from the government’s Healthy Learners Programme, which has established 1,060 health rooms in schools across 45 districts. The initiative aims to improve learners’ access to basic healthcare, reducing barriers to education caused by illness.

The update was announced at a media owners’ workshop organised by Healthy Learners under the Ministry of Education. Officials highlighted the programme’s role in addressing common health issues among schoolchildren, including malaria, diarrhoea, and respiratory infections.

Health rooms are staffed by trained community health workers and provide first aid, health education, and referrals. The programme is part of broader government efforts to integrate health services into the education system.

Stakeholders praised the initiative for its reach and impact, noting that healthier children are more likely to attend school and perform better academically. The government plans to expand the programme to additional districts in the coming years.
