Over a thousand Tobagonians face unexpected unemployment following decisions made by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), leading to public outcry over unfulfilled election promises. The recent layoffs affect families just as the new school term approaches, casting a shadow over the promises made during the 2025 elections.
Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis has voiced strong criticism against the THA, highlighting the plight of the laid-off workers, many of whom were led to believe they would secure permanent employment by mid-2026. “These are not just numbers. These are parents, breadwinners, and families who depend on these jobs,” Cudjoe-Lewis asserted, referencing the mass dismissals which coincide with a crucial time for school-bound families.
The affected workers were part of the controversial ‘Ten on Ten off Programme’, which Cudjoe-Lewis described as an election gimmick. She accused the THA of leveraging employment promises for electoral advantage, resulting in disillusionment among the workforce. While assurances were made for job security and permanence, those promises have now unraveled, leaving many in financial uncertainty.
Beyond the personal impact, this misalignment between pre-election commitments and post-election realities has put the spotlight back on the THA. Cudjoe-Lewis urges those in power to prioritize worker welfare and re-evaluate their approach, condemning the Assembly for what she perceives as deliberate negligence in handling employment and economic strategy.
As the situation develops, there are growing calls for the THA to take responsibility and provide viable employment opportunities to those affected, safeguarding their families’ well-being during these precarious times.
