Ortega pushes Nicaragua toward no-elections model, triggering international backlash

Nicaragua has opened a new chapter of political tension after its National Assembly announced it would analyze President Daniel Ortega’s proposal to prohibit general elections. The move, which would effectively eliminate democratic elections in the country, has sparked immediate international condemnation.

Ortega’s proposal marks a significant escalation in his government’s authoritarian shift, which has already seen the crackdown on opposition figures and independent media. The Assembly’s decision to review the proposal signals a likely approval, given the ruling party’s dominance.
