The People’s National Movement (PNM), the opposition party in the Caribbean, is calling for the dismissal of Senator David Nakhid. This comes in the wake of controversial statements Nakhid made on his Facebook page. He had faced criticism for his comments on the government’s decision to cancel the military independence parade, scheduled for August 31st, which he had referred to as a PNM event. The government, which has only been in power for three months, stated that the cancellation was out of an abundance of caution due to reported threats against government officials. Marvin Gonsalez, the PNM Chairman, believes Nakhid’s appointment should be revoked. He further stated that the leader of the United National Congress and Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, cannot distance herself from Nakhid’s comments.
