Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has voiced significant worries over Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s conduct, branding it as ‘dictatorial’. The criticism was prompted by the Prime Minister’s comments in response to questions about a possible military base. Beckles contended that Persad-Bissessar’s directive for citizens to ‘behave yuhself’ demonstrates a disregard for democratic accountability. She further accused the Prime Minister of providing vague answers and demonstrating an unresponsive attitude towards public inquiry. Beckles emphasized that public questions are valid and pertain to nationally relevant matters. The Opposition Leader also criticized the government’s inconsistent messaging, arguing it undermines public trust. Beckles added that every Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister before April 2025 had upheld international law and strengthened CARICOM solidarity, but the current administration is showing disrespect for international law and public concerns. She reminded Persad-Bissessar that her office is subject to public will and scrutiny, and emphasized the country’s entitlement to honesty, transparency, and respect.
