Opposition Leader Condemns Calls for Gang Unity Against Law Enforcement amid Heightened Public Debate

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has publicly condemned statements made during a recent protest that seemingly encouraged rival gangs to unite against law enforcement. She expressed her disapproval in a social media post, labeling such calls as ‘sick and evil’. Persad-Bissessar stressed that no law-abiding citizen should support any appeal for violent gangs to organize against the police or fellow citizens.

The controversy was spurred by remarks made at a protest connected to public outrage over recent legal developments involving an individual named Kaia Sealy. During this event, a speaker called for a revolution and for members of various gangs to unite. These provocative comments were taken seriously by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, with Assistant Commissioner Richard Smith warning about the potential dangerous consequences of alliances between protest movements and criminal elements.

Smith also cautioned organizers and supporters to be mindful of whom they associate with. He noted that the motives of criminal gangs may not align with those of ordinary citizens seeking justice or reform. The presence of gang members at protests, he warned, could escalate the risk of violence and endanger participants.

Persad-Bissessar also pointed out that Trinidad and Tobago has been plagued with years of gang violence. She questioned why similar levels of public outrage are not consistently shown for victims of gang-related crime across the country. The Opposition Leader emphasized that communities continue to live under the threat of criminal activity and deserve protection and support.
