Opposition Labels Road Safety Situation a National Crisis

Opposition Member of Parliament Christian Birchwood has described Trinidad and Tobago’s road safety situation as a national crisis, accusing the government of weakening enforcement systems. He argued that changes to the demerit point system have reduced its deterrent effect, allowing reckless driving behavior to persist. Despite increased fines, the opposition claims there has been no measurable improvement in road safety outcomes, with accidents and serious injuries reportedly rising. Calls were made for a comprehensive national road safety audit and a clear enforcement strategy to address accident-prone areas and repeat offenders.
