OPINION: Yes, Swedish immigrants vote in their own interests – just like other voters

Following the recent Swedish election, members of the Sweden Democrats and other political figures have attributed the party’s electoral decline to the voting patterns of citizens with immigrant backgrounds.

Sweden Democrat party leader Jimmie Akesson alleged during a post-election press conference that the Social Democrats and the Left Party had mobilized Islamist voters. Additionally, Moderate Party MP Fredrik Karrholm, writing in the British magazine The Spectator, described the high percentage of votes for the Social Democrats and the Left Party in the immigrant-heavy Rosengard neighborhood of Malmo as Saddam Hussein numbers.

A fact check conducted by public broadcaster SVT and The Local confirmed that voters with foreign backgrounds supported the Social Democrats and the Left Party in significantly higher numbers than they supported right-wing parties.
