One Reportedly Killed After Iranian Commercial Vessel Hit Near Qeshm

An Iranian commercial vessel was struck in waters near the southern island of Qeshm early on September 13, resulting in one death and three injuries, according to a senior local official.

Amir Teymouri, the governor of Qeshm, stated that the incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. local time in the waters between Hengam Island and the village of Shib Deraz. Teymouri did not disclose the identity of the vessel, the nature of the projectile involved, or the medical status of the injured individuals.

The state broadcaster IRIB characterized the event as an attack by a “terrorist enemy,” though no specific group or nation has claimed responsibility, and no Iranian official has publicly assigned blame for the strike.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on September 13 that an unknown projectile struck a vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz. A subsequent update from the organization confirmed that a fire had broken out on board the ship.

This incident occurs amid a period of heightened regional tension and escalating attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. The United States military and Iranian forces have engaged in a series of reciprocal strikes involving oil tankers and warships in recent weeks.
