Police in Cunupia confirmed that one person died and two others were left in critical condition after a vehicle plunged into the Cunupia River early Sunday morning. The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. along the Southern Main Road, shortly after a red Nissan Note left a nearby gas station to refuel.
The driver, a rental from an Arima company, lost control of the car as it travelled north. The vehicle slammed into a metal barrier on the western side of the road before dropping roughly 15 feet into the river. All three occupants—driver, a man, and a woman—were rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment.
While the driver succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, the other two occupants remain in critical condition. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and have not yet identified the deceased driver.
No other vehicles were involved, and traffic on the Southern Main Road was cleared after the incident. Witnesses reported seeing the red rental car before it disappeared into the water.
